Introduction to Congruence

What It Is
A natural force present in everything on Aropria
Reach
Every person, creature, plant and object is permeated with it and produces it
Mechanism
Understanding. What is understood deeply becomes possible
Who Has It
Everyone. Most people never notice
Adepts
Those who turn it outward, as what anyone else would call magic

Congruence is the force everything here is steeped in. Every person, every creature, every plant and every object is permeated with it and gives it off again. It moves through the world in flows and eddies, the way water moves in a creek, and to the best of anyone's ability to measure it, it cannot be measured.

What makes it worth an article rather than a footnote is what it responds to: understanding.

Understanding is the mechanism

Congruence increases what a person is capable of, in proportion to how well they understand what they are doing. That is the whole of it, and everything else on this page follows from it.

For most people it is subtle to the point of invisibility. They are quicker at the tasks they know well. They remember better than they have any right to. A person who understands the world broadly tends toward a longer life, better health, a stronger body and an easier time persuading other people — and will rarely connect any of that to congruence, because it simply feels like being good at things.

Everyone is congruence-empowered. This is not a gift that some are born with and others are not. It is the ordinary condition of being alive on Aropria.

Where it stops being subtle

Those who excel — who understand something deeply rather than merely well — pass a point where the effect is no longer quiet. What they gain divides roughly in two.

Passive. Strength, speed, endurance beyond what a body should manage. Jumping distances that ought not to be possible. Reading a room and moving people in it. Planning several steps further ahead than anyone else at the table. None of this looks like magic. It looks like someone who is very, very good.

Outward. Fire thrown from the hand. Plants forced into growth. The dead raised to work. This does look like magic, and everyone calls it that.

Those who manifest congruence outwardly are called Adepts. The distinction is in the manifestation, not the amount: an Adept is not more congruent than a master tactician, only differently pointed.

Why an Adept studies

Broad understanding raises general ability. Dramatic effects need specific knowledge, and this is the part outsiders find hardest to believe.

An Adept who throws fire has studied combustion. They know fire needs fuel, heat and air, and what happens when any of the three is removed. They know how flame travels, how it behaves against stone and against cloth, what it does to matter it consumes. The fire answers the understanding, and an Adept who has not done the work throws nothing.

This is why the academies exist, why the great nations fund them, and why Nashriam's scholars have been so difficult for anyone to outpace. It is also why the schools of congruence are organised as disciplines of study rather than as lists of spells.

Where to go next

Congruence Cores — congruence in solid form: how cores form, what they are worth, and why the continent's money is minted against them.

Congruence in the Natural World — the force without a wielder: flows and eddies, hot and cold spots, storms, and what a world shaped by all of it actually looks like.

Congruence Hazards — where that goes wrong. Broken relics, mutated deviations, and side effects still running centuries later.

The items: Common Magic Items, Rare Magic Items and Artifacts. Every magic item is a core doing something.

National Technologies — what each great power has built with congruence, and why that determines its standing.

For two places where congruence has done something to a whole landscape, see the Orange Reef and the Blighted Lands — the second being the one place on the continent where congruence cannot be reached at all.
